Art & Good News 6-17-2023

Starting with some art…

A screw and a ball. meant to evoke the old looney tunes joke of the Screw ball flag.
Drill

Did anyone watch Looney Tunes when they were kids? I used to love it when Bugs Bunny would hold up the pictogram signs that would inevitably mean screwball or some other message of craziness or insanity. They would always make me laugh, and watching my kids take in the same humor and laugh along with me is just a priceless inspiration for this week’s drawing. I hope your week was as memorable as a Looney Toons Cartoon, but maybe without an A.C.M.E. anvil on your head. It’s always Duck Season!

Now to the Good News…

Webb Telescope Will Soon Get a Tiny Sidekick to Explore Alien Worlds

The Webb telescope is getting a powerful new ally about the size of a toaster. The MANTIS, or Monitoring Activity from Nearby sTars with uv Imaging and Spectroscopy, will be a satellite to the James Webb telescope and is planned to take photos using the full range of UV light. The Webb telescope photographs in infrared, so the MANTIS is a proposed sidekick that scientists hope will fill in gaps from a more visible light spectrum.

Paving the path towards a global plastics treaty

Yearly the globe produces approximately 400 million tons of plastic, and almost 14 million tons enter the world’s oceans. It is becoming a problem that cannot be ignored. To that end, 180 countries met at the Unesco headquarters in Paris to discuss and iron out what will become a transformative treaty expected to take effect by 2025. The treaty will address plastic from creation to pollution, with at least 94 nations wanting to ban or phase out polymers, chemicals, and plastic items. It was an unprecedented show of solidarity.

Amritsar: The Indian city where no one goes hungry

The Golden Temple in Amritsar is a shining example of selfless service, feeding everyone who comes to the temple and would like a bite to eat. Serving over 100,000 people daily, if you’re hungry and in need, they have a plate ready to fill you up. They work to ensure that no one goes hungry. Despite the more complicated parts of its history, the people of Amritsar have a long tradition of helping others.
