Art & Good News 7-22-2023

Starting with some art…

decaying wooden sign that looks like it is pointing to the left and reads "TRADING OUTPOST THIS WAY". The sign is surrounded by long grass and a tulip.
Outpost

So did anyone else ever notice that in old westerns or cartoons set out west, all have the same look to their signposts? I wonder if those are accurate or if Hollywood is coloring our images of what this would have looked like in the old West. I hope your week was as amazing as the song “Houston” by Dean Martin.

Now to the Good News…

Feeding daffodil extract to cows could reduce methane emissions

Well, this is an interesting experiment in reducing methane emissions from cattle. The United Kingdom just backed a four-year study looking into daffodil growth at high altitudes to reduce methane emissions from cows. The daffodils produce a special compound used in Alzheimer’s medicine when grown at higher altitudes. However, it also has the potential to help cows improve protein utilization. If it works, the compound could reduce the methane output of the cattle.

A travelling dark room is helping refugee children express themselves through art

The Sirkhane Darkoom on the Turkish/Syrian border is bringing creativity and connection to children through photography. The traveling workshop gives kids a film camera for a week and then uses a mobile darkroom to teach them about photography principles and spur creativity. These kids are coming up with some beautiful photos and telling their stories at the same time. When I was learning photography, film was the primary medium. The constraints of film and the inability to delete can create some of the most beautiful art you will ever see.

Teen Uses Hydroponic Gardens To Fight Food Insecurity in NYC & Tel Aviv

A 13-year-old from New York made the most of his time during the covid lockdowns. Steven Hoffen started with an award-winning documentary about Sindyanna of Galilee, a nonprofit where Arab and Jewish women work together growing produce in hydroponic gardens. Then after that, he ran with their idea and created a nonprofit called Growing Peace that teaches and implements hydroponic gardens for communities in need. There are currently four between New York and Tel Aviv. This kid is an example of the good one person can do when you put your mind to changing the world for the better.
