Art & Good News 8-2-2025

From my Art-chive…

A newt sitting under an apple tree sleeping. Unbeknownst to the newt, an apple is falling from the tree and about to hit the newt in the head. Like the adage about Sir Isaac Newton.
Newt

Sir Isaac NEWT-on in the house. This one is just a little funny doodle that popped into my head when the Inktober prompt was Newt one random July in 2021. I always remembered the story about Sir Isaac Newton discovering, realizing the principles of gravity while sitting under an apple tree. It is probably an apocryphal story, but it had always been stuck in my head, so when the prompt “Newt” came up, I thought about how funny it would be if a literal newt was under an apple tree and about to get his head bonked by an apple. I hope you all have had a wonderful two weeks.

Now to the Good News…

Could your breath reveal who you are—and how you feel? Researchers say yes

Meditation

There is a new study out that suggests that our breathing is as unique as our fingerprints or voice. And apparently, we can be identified by the pattern of our breathing. You can even identify if a person suffers from anxiety or depression, and the study suggests that adjustment of our breathing pattern can help with those conditions. The study has a long way to go, but if this proves true, it could be very interesting what this says about us.

Deposit, drink, return: Lisbon is the first European capital with a citywide reusable cup scheme

A stovetop coffee pot sits on the table, brimming with freshly brewed coffee, creamy milk, and sugar cubes.
Reusable cups in Lisbon

In Lisbon, they are taking the adage Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to a whole new level with their citywide reusable cup system. The company TOMRA is responsible for adding in the cup return systems around the city. The way it works is you pay a cup deposit that gets refunded to you when you turn back in the cup at one of the deposit points. The whole process reminds me of the old aluminum can returns that gave you money for turning in old soda cans. My brothers and I gained a lot of fun money as kids putting those into the crusher. We need more initiatives like this so that more people remember the reduce and reuse part of the old adage.

Switzerland Pilots First Solar Power Plant on Active Railway Tracks

Sunways is a company testing solar panels on active railway tracks in Switzerland’s canton of Neuchâtel. This program was initially turned down, but independent studies proved that there are some serious benefits to the program. They have thought about every contingency, and if the pilot program works, it can be easily expanded to the full country. This is good because till now Switzerland has been loath to install solar panels in the Swiss Alps, and if they want to achieve energy independence, they will need a different solution.

Till next time keep looking for the good news, and see you in two weeks with more good news.
