From my Art-chive…

We all want tranquility and relaxation. This started as an attempt at drawing a male figure meditating for an Inktober prompt. That said, as my mind started to wander while drawing, I started to think about one of my kids, and mine (let’s be honest), favorite book series. Would Percy Jackson or Harry Potter have benefited from getting a bit of peace? I think they both, given the hectic adventures these heroes have, could have used a calm meditation practice. So I decided to take the figure I had started and make the slight tweaks it would take to make them look like Harry and Percy, respectively. They are both written with dark hair and a few other generic descriptors, so I felt like it was easy to tweak without much drastic change to the original piece. What do you all think? Do you have a favorite book character who could use a little R&R? I hope you all had a fantastic week.
Now to the Good News…
Engineer Revives the Pay Phone for Vermont Community to Make Free Calls in Their Cellular Dead Zone

Have you ever used a payphone? When I was younger in a time before the prevalence of the cell phone, you would have to have change or a phone card in order to make a call home for a ride. I most often used the payphone when I was at the movie theater and it was time to be picked up as a kid. The good news here is that there are people making use of old pay phones to ensure a way to make a call in rural areas with no cell phone coverage. This particular article is about an initiative out of Vermont where one man made the pay phones free so he could help those in need in what amounts to a dead zone for cell service.
Australia’s Revolutionary Hydrogen Powder Is Easier and Cheaper to Use for Clean Energy

Hydrogen has been believed to be a possible solution to our energy and climate crisis for a long time. The trouble has been that as a highly flammable substance, it means that safe transportation options are limited. We need to keep it stable and cost-effective to transport. Not to mention greening the production of the energy source. Deakin University scientists in Australia have come up with a solution where the hydrogen is stored in a powder during transport. Even the byproduct that comes from extracting the hydrogen fuel can be sent back to restart the process again, creating a truly circular supply chain. As someone who grew up surrounded by chemists, I really like this story.
Volunteers working to install hundreds of manufactured reefs on Kiawah Island

On Kiawah Island in South Carolina, volunteers are working to restore reefs by building manufactured ones that they hope to restore the salt marsh with. If these oyster reefs take hold, they will take huge strides toward buffering the area from storm surges, increased tides, added water filtration, as well as adding habitat resilience for the local animals. It is wonderful to see areas make use of things like their regular oyster roast and use the waste to help the local ecological resilience.
