Starting with some art…

Fresh

Sometimes you need to challenge yourself, and sometimes you have an insane week with soccer and school plays and work. When this happens you just need an easy way to get out good news and something wonderful that happened in the world.

Between kids activities and all the work things I am juggling at the moment I am not sure how I am functioning at the moment.

I know that for the last two weeks my couch has been a great place to crash when I am tired though 😜.

I hope your week has been full of good weather and fun…

Now to the Good News…

FTC bans noncompete agreements, making it easier for workers to quit. Here’s what to know.

In a landmark decision that is highly advantageous to workers, the FTC has banned noncompete agreements across the United States. For those who are not familiar, it has been a common practice in the US for companies to require workers to sign noncompete agreements. These agreements prevent you from being able to take another job in your industry for a period of time after leaving your job (the most common I have seen is 2 years).

In the record 3-2 vote the FTC decided that this is an unfair requirement that limits employees autonomy in looking for better paying jobs in their field. While, employers argued this was to protect their IP (intellectual property), the reality is that companies have other ways to protect their data and all this really does is keep employees (who often cannot unionize) from changing jobs easily and often can mean losing out on good opportunities when they arise.

This decision is a win for workers who can now truly chase the best job fit for them, with better pay and benefits. Increasing their opportunities for growth and better work life.

Gamers revolutionize biomedical research via DNA analysis

Using a mini-game built into Borderlands 3, gamers have significantly contributed to the analysis of microbiomes and their historical evolutions. In fact the research collected while playing Borderlands Science has collected five times more data than an earlier game Phylo did over a ten year period. This collaboration between scientists and gamers has shown the power of citizen science in helping researchers achieve their goals, and the science being researched using the mini-game will have wide reaching implications far beyond the game and the lab. It is expected to give us a much better understanding of our human health in many over areas as time goes on.
