Independent Bookstore Day

I have fun friends with great ideas

This year a friend reached out to have me make a custom design for Independent Bookstore Day, and since I have been working on projects at a slower more sustainable pace I thought I would be a fun way to get back into posting more about what I am working on. Or where I am hiding on the internet.

They wanted a shirt that said “Another Year in the Books” on the front and on the back it was supposed to look like the library check out card from the days before the internet. I started with flipping through some of my favorite hand lettering books for inspiration and the after a bit of doodling this is what I came up with.

The idea for the front of the design was to give the implication of books on a shelf, and I definitely had fun planning out the look in that regard. The library checkout card came from a font that I had bought on Etsy and basic cutout effects.

Not going to lie that when it came time to print was really nervous about the back cutting correctly and me not messing up when I was pulling away all the extra little bits of the text. I cannot imagine having to line things up in multiple colors without issues.

I think the final result turned out great though and I am so glad that the ladies who asked me to make this for them included me in their fun creative journey for Independent Bookstore Day. Get out and check out a local indie bookshop in your neighborhood and find something fun to read. Or also consider your local library they tend to be pretty awesome and a huge part of the reason I am able to make fun things like this.

I look forward to showing you all more of the wonderful things I am working on but after a year of burn out I fully intend it to be more sporadic. To all those who subscribe and follow along with the silly things my mind creates know that I appreciate you hanging around and checking out the fun art.

Thank you so much for joining me on my journey.
